TECHNICAL NOTE | MODE 2 PORTABLE EVSE
Plug-overheating protection for 16A Schuko and 13A UK power plugs
When we decide to choose one mode 2 portable EVSE for our own car, we find too many designs, more functions, and cheaper price, while when we choose, we often ignore the most important factor – safety. Let us see how we focus on power plug for 16A Schuko and 13A UK power plug.
The dangers of a power plug becoming excessively hot include:
1. Fire hazard: High temperatures can cause the insulation material of the plug or socket to soften or carbonize, eventually igniting surrounding combustible materials. When the temperature exceeds a certain limit – for instance, if the casing reaches over 300°C – the plastic may carbonize, turn black, or even catch fire.
2. Risk of electric shock: Overheating often stems from poor contact, which increases local electrical resistance. High heat can damage the insulation layer, exposing live parts and increasing the risk of electric shock when plugging or unplugging the device.
3. Equipment damage: Sustained high temperatures accelerate the aging of internal components and wiring, shortening the device's service life and causing gradual, cumulative damage to the appliance itself.
4. Accelerated aging and short circuits: High heat causes wire insulation to soften and deform, further worsening poor contact. This creates a vicious cycle of "heating – aging – increased heat", which can ultimately lead to a short circuit.
For the UK power plug, it has a long history:
At the same time, it means in the UK the socket has been in use for a very long time. The sockets and cables have been embedded within the conduits and walls for decades; combined with the UK's consistently wet and rainy weather – particularly in winter – this easily leads to the deterioration and aging of the wiring and cables.
For the Schuko power plug, the history is shorter: the German Schuko socket (specifically the CEE 7/4 standard) was invented and patented in 1925 by the German electrical company ABL Sursum.
Here is our solution for the Mode 2 EV charger. Our power plugs feature a temperature-sensing mechanism – typically utilizing an NTC thermistor – that monitors the plug's surface temperature. As the temperature rises, the resistance changes and sends a signal to the PCB, triggering a temperature-reduction protocol. Our standard mechanism operates as follows:
This temperature control mechanism is designed to protect the power plug and prevent spontaneous combustion or fire hazards. We customize the control logic to meet each client's specific requirements. The video below demonstrates our testing process, clearly showing how the system responds to excessive plug temperatures by dynamically adjusting the current.

Temperature-protection logic of the Mode 2 plug: current reduction between 65°C and 80°C, cut-off within 0.2 s above 80°C, automatic restart below 65°C.
